This ground was also used for various other games too, such as Horse Racing, Cricket, Rugby, Football, and Hockey. Golf in Sri Lanka, like many other British sports gained wider popularity on the Galle Face Green. The Colombo Golf Club was formed here and in 1896, it moved to its present location which was initially a model farm, owned by Sir Charles Henry de Soysa, a Ceylonese philanthropist. In 1928 the privilege of using the prefix “Royal” was conferred upon the Club by the King George V. Currently the golf course is 5’770 m long 18-hole par 71 course. Nuwara Eliya's climate lent itself to becoming the prime sanctuary of the British civil servants and planters in Sri Lanka (then known as Ceylon). Many British lived in Nuware Eliya in the 19th century.
